At The School of Harvest, learning is more than academics — it’s a holistic, immersive experience that nurtures the whole adolescent. Our program honors each young person as a vital member of a vibrant circle of study, work, creativity, and community.

Rooted in Montessori principles for ages 12 to 18, our curriculum weaves together core academic subjects — humanities, math, science (which we call “occupations”), and language arts — with hands-on work, outdoor learning, and meaningful engagement with our city, land, and broader community.

Two Interwoven Centers

Center for Study:  Students dive deeply into humanities, language arts, mathematics, and sciences through integrated lessons, reflective dialogue, and inquiry-based learning. Creative and physical expression flow through all subjects, supporting growth of mind, body, and spirit.

Center for Work:  Learning extends beyond academics into real-world projects including gardening, cooking, crafting, and social enterprise. These experiences build practical skills, social responsibility, and a meaningful connection to community.

Daily Rhythms and Community Life

• Growth Circles: Each morning begins with a Growth Circle, where young people gather to set intentions, share reflections, and prepare for the day.

• Two Work Cycles: The day includes two focused work cycles—morning and afternoon—each about three hours long. During these periods, students move fluidly between academic lessons, hands-on projects, collaborative work, and independent study, balancing personal focus with shared inquiry.

• Rotating Roles: Students share responsibility for the community through rotating roles that support the farm, production and exchange, kitchen, circles, and other essential functions — cultivating a sense of belonging and shared stewardship.

• Gratitude Circles: The day closes with a Gratitude Circle, a time to reflect, give thanks, and reconnect as a community.

 

Signature Elements

• Reflective Dialogues: Guided discussions where students practice critical thinking, respectful listening, and confidence in expressing ideas.

• Land-Based Learning: Regular time outdoors at our farm and green spaces, in partnership with Washington Parks and People, connects students with the land and its lessons.

• Creative & Physical Expression: Art, music, movement, and storytelling are woven throughout daily life, honoring the full spectrum of adolescent growth.

• Production & Exchange: Students create goods and services they share or trade within the community, fostering entrepreneurship and social responsibility.

• Immersive Learning Experiences: Monthly outings deepen learning through visits to farms, museums, cultural sites, and local businesses. Community experts regularly enrich lessons with workshops and shared knowledge.

• Circle Hospitality: We open our doors to neighbors, other schools, and community groups for gatherings, workshops, and cultural events that foster connection, respect, and mutual learning within our extended village.
